Indonesia’s domestic cement consumption rose 12.3 per cent in December from a year ago, resulting in a small rise for 2006 despite the impact of weak consumer spending early last year, industry data showed on Thursday.   Domestic consumption hit 2.97Mt last month compared to 2.64 million in December 2005, according to data from the Indonesian Cement Association. Vietnam will need about US$3.4bn worth of cement between now and 2010 to meet burgeoning demand, the Ministry of Construction said yesterday. Analysts at UBS say that a potential increase in coal prices in 2007 is likely to have a more severe impact on cement makers than on steelmakers. In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that Chinese coal prices are expected to rise by 5% y/y during 2007. A 5% hike in coal prices could dilute earnings of Chinese steelmakers by 2%-5% and for other steel manufacturers in the region by 0%-0.4%, the analysts say. The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) has acquired a 7.6 per cent stake in Egyptian company Suez Cement.    A statement released by the Egyptian stock market said that ADIA had bought a stake of 138,427,01 shares listed as Global Depository Receipts (GDR).    The statement gave no details about the value of the deal but said ADIA bought those shares from businessman Hisham Sadiq Al Sowidi, a Suez Cement board member.    Gulf News sources said that Suez Cement transferred these stocks ...

Cemex will invest at least US$1.2bn in Mexico over the period 2006 to 2008.   The company will invest in the enlargement of plants, capital increase and energy projects, Cemex institutional relations vice-president, Ricardo Charvel, said.
