Six-month cement sales register 25 per cent increase

Cement sales in Pakistan stood at 9.975Mt during the first six months of the current financial year, rising by 25 per cent compared to the same period of last fiscal. Cemex plans to enter India

Financial analysts consider it positive that Mexico’s Cemex, the world’s third biggest cement maker, starts negotiations to purchase India’s cement company Deepak Cements and Chemicals. However, the company hasn’t reported about any negotiations yet. According to the report ‘Prospects for 2007 and the Economic Operating Situation Analysis on Cement Industry in 2006’, released by the China Cement Association yesterday, the profits made by the entire cement industry will hit a new historic record in 2007. The report predicts that in 2007 China’s demand for cement will exceed 100mt, with the rate of growth exceeding 10%.

Builders and property developers’ are bracing themselves for losses after the Malaysian Government’s decision to backdate price hikes in cement, instead of giving them some lead time.    From December 1 2006, the Government lifted ceiling prices for cement by between 3 per cent and 10 per cent.    The cement price in Pahang, Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya increased from RM198 a tonne to RM219. Cement maker Texas Industries Inc. on Thursday said fiscal second-quarter net income rose sharply, helped by increased prices and a gain from a settlement.    Net income for the quarter ended Nov. 30 more than quadrupled to $28.7m, or $1.09 per share, compared with a profit of $6.2m, or 26 cents per share a year ago. Gultekin Akyusek, general coordinator of Limak Cement Group, said that the company would build three cement plants this year. The new plants which will have a total production capacity of 4.5Mta, will be built in the Marmara, Aegean and Central Anatolia regions.
