The US$12,800m offer by Cemex for Rinker has been flatly rejected by the Australian-based group.  Cemex is obviously trying to take advantage of the weakness being seen in the US and New South Wales housing markets. Camargo Correa Cimentos cement company is seeking opportunities abroad as a way to fulfil its plans to double size until 2012. The acquisition of Argentina’s Loma Negra has speeded up its international drive, says superintendent Antonio Miguel Marques. The company is currently in the race for the assets of Yibitas, in Turkey, which has a capacity of 2.5Mta. North Africa is seen also a possibility, as is the strategy is to supply the European market.

Analysts see price downturn in FY08, India

Indonesia’s cement production fell 5.6 per cent to 24.27Mt in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period last year.     Cement consumption dropped 2.4 per cent to 23.55Mt. The Cement Manufacturers’ Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) has urged the Department of Trade and Industry to locate and to withdraw from buyers 30,000 bags of allegedly low quality Horse brand cement from China which DTI said were illegally released from a warehouse here.
