Grasim acquires cement unit in HP

AV Birla group company Grasim Industries Ltd on Thursday said it has acquired a small cement unit for Rs 10 lakh. The company acquired 50,000 equity shares of Himachal Pradesh-based Harish Cement Ltd for Rs 20 each, it said. The unit will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grasim, subject to approvals.

Switzerland’s cement major Holcim to build HUF 65 bn plant in Hungary

Swiss cement major Holcim is expected to construct set up a HUF 65 billion (EUR 236 m) cement factory in northern Hungary’s Nyergesújfalu. The plant would have an annual capacity of 1.5Mt and the parent company has already given the go-ahead to the investment of its Hungarian arm. Vietnam Cement Corporation will re-organise under the parent-subsidiary model pursuant to a recent decision issued by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung.     Decision No 196/2006/QD-TTg dated August 29 provides that the parent company remains a State-owned enterprise and is responsible for maintaining State capital in the parent and subsidiary companies.     Ten subsidiary companies will be equitised between 2006-10, with controlling interests maintained by the parent company. India’s Grasim Industries Ltd said it has acquired all of Harish Cement, an unlisted company, for INR1 million.     In a notice to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the company said it bought 50,000 shares of the Himachal Pradesh-based cement maker at INR20 a share.

Cement companies reported more or less flat sales on a YoY basis in August, given the fact that there is a slowdown in construction activity during the monsoon period. Pakistan posts record exports

The Pakistan cement industry managed to export a total of 0.24Mt, which represented the highest-ever export of cement in a single month. Figures released by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers’ Association on Monday (Sept 04) showed growth of 26.2 per cent in exports during August over the July exports of 0.19Mt. A.R. Taiwan Cement shipments grow 10%

Taiwan Cement Corp’s shipments in August grew by around 10 per cent month on month. Among the shipment, domestic sales reached 410,000t, increasing by 14% month on month and overseas shipment reached 540,000t, growing by eight per cent on monthly basis. As the fourth quarter is traditionally peak season, Taiwan Cement predicted the pre-tax profits of it would reach NT$6bn this year.
