Portland set to acquire stake in Kigali Cement, Rwanda

Buoyed by a strong balance sheet and a reduced cost of doing business, East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC) has signed a joint venture with Rwanda’s Kigali Cement Company. Under the arrangement, EAPCC will acquire a 60 per cent stake in the company, before setting up a cement milling plant in Kigali. HeidelbergCement AG, Germany’s biggest cement maker, said a joint venture was raided by German antitrust officers who are investigating price fixing in the erection of silos on building sites. The cartel authorities searched offices of Franken Maxit Mauermoertel GmbH, a venture between HeidelbergCement and a private investor that’s based in the south-German town of Kasendorf, spokeswoman Brigitte Fickel said today. One of India’s leading cement manufacturers, Andhra Cements, has planned to increase its manufacturing Phase I capacity from the current 1.7Mta to 3.0Mta. The estimated cost for the expansion is likely to be Rs 100 crore, to be financed through debt and internal accrual. No price hike in cement is expected till the end of this year. A construction slowdown as a result of rising interest rates will trim Turkey’s cement sector’s turnover, but domestic sales will still grow 20 per cent, the head of Oyak Cement and Automotive told Reuters. Vietnam: construction material market remains stable

The Vietnam Cement Association said demand for cement will increase from now till the end of the year. But the price of cement will remain stable at between VND750,000 and VND800,000 per tonne in northern provinces and at VND900,000 and VND950,000 per tonne in southern provinces.   In the fourth quarter, two more cement factories will be put into operation. Kampala International University (KIU) has dragged Hima Cement to court over failure to supply cement to their teaching hospital in Ishaka.  The university is seeking sh2.6b in damages and costs.    Through Kavuma Kabenge and Company Advocates, the university said Hima was to supply 50,000t of cement at sh17.6b but only supplied a few tonnes.
