Cement firms add 3.65Mt of fresh capacity, India

Cement companies in India have registered fresh capacity additions of 3.65Mt during Apr-Jun 2006 (about 7Mt for whole year 2005-2006). This has increased the total installed capacity of the Indian cement industry to 164Mt. Of the 3.65Mt new capacity, Tamil Nadu has added 2.27Mt, while Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have added the remaining capacity. Gresik to construct new plant on Java, Indonesia

PT Semen Gresik says it will start constructing a cement plant on the island of Java next year at a cost of IDR2.802 trillion. The RATM group has announced it will start construction of a second line at Iskitimcement, Russia. The new line will have a capacity of 1.3Mta with an investment of around US$120m.  RATM will finance under 30 per cent of the cost by itself and tap banking loans for the remainder.

Birla to set up cement unit in Jharkhand, India

Birla Corporation has informed the Jharkhand government that it was keen to set up a 2Ma cement plant in in the state of Jharkhand at an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. The company’s Senior Joint President PC Nalwaya and Managing Director KC Mittal met Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda at the state capital recently and placed the proposal.

Government is expecting that the price of cement will significantly be reduced shortly, following a response by the Venezuelan government to a request made earlier by Guyana to receive imports. Cement prices have come down by Rs2-4 per bag in Mumbai even as the first shower of monsoon lashed the city.
