Cement consumption jumps to 11%

Domestic cement consumption is recording double-digit growth rates this year. According to the just released by the Indian CMA (Cement Manufacturer’s Association) numbers, the consumption grew a record 11 per cent for the nine months ended December ‘05 to 97.8Mt. If cement shows double-digit growth rates in ‘06, it will only be the second time in the last 10 years that this has happened. New producer on the horizon

A group of Spanish businessmen, led by Bernard Le Genissel, have announced plans for a new 1.8Mta plant to be built close to Tangiers, Morocco. The quarry and land have been purchased and almost all the final permits are in place, along with agreements with the local port for bringing in coal and exporting cement and clinker. Tenders for this new integrated facility are now being drawn up, together with the requisite EPA. Spokesman expect a 24-month construction and start-up by early 2009.

Damage claim against German producers

The court case against three German cement producers for damages as a result of an illegal cartel, originally launched last August, has now been extended to cover all of the six leading cement groups in the country and the amount of the claim has risen from €136m to €210m.  The six companies involved, HeidelbergCement, Dyckerhoff, Schwenk, Cemex, Holcim and Lafarge, were fined a total of €661m by the German Cartel Office in 2003, but because of appeals, most of these fines have yet to become ...

Thanks to the introduction of mainland China’s 11th five-year economic development plan, Taiwan’s cement producers, including Taiwan Cement Corp. (TCC), Asia Cement Corp. and Chia Hsin Cement Corp., will see substantial growth in profitability in the second half of this year.  TCC said it has begun vying for the orders for cement needed to support the construction of the Guangzhou-Wuhan high-speed railway. Florida’s largest plant to increase production

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has just approved a 37 percent increase in the production of clinker at Titan America’s Pennsuco plant. In December 2005, Ukranian cement production rose by 56.4 per cent compared with December 2004, to 732,000t, the State Statistics Committee has disclosed.  In 2005, cement production rose by 14.6 per cent compared with 2004, to 12,183,000t, while In 2004, cement production rose by 19.3 per cent or 1,719,000t compared with 2003, to 10,635,000t.  More than 15 enterprises produce cement in Ukraine, and their total annual capacity is more than 20Mt.

Ural plants produce more in 2005

In 2005, Eurocement’s Katavsky Cement produced 884,000t of cement, up 7.8 per cent year-on-year.  The rated capacity of Katavsky Cement is 1.55Mt. Production at another Eurocement-owned Ural plant, Nevyansky Cementnik, equalled 1.09Mt, almost the same as in 2004. The capacity of the oldest Ural cement mill is 1.1Mt.
