Mexico Ara, Cemex announce joint project

The third largest Mexican home construction company Consorcio Ara and Mexico’s largest cement producer Cementos Mexicanos (Cemex) announced a joint construction project, it was reported on August 29, 2005.  The project consists of the construction of 5350 homes and a commercial centre on an area of 89 ha, owned by Ara, said Jaime del Rio, an official from Ara. Cement Plants in GCC Countries increasing

The number of cement plants in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries stood at 32 at the end of 2004, according to a report of the Qatar-based Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC).  The total investments in the plants amount to $5.8bn and their workforce totals 13,000 employees.    According to the report, the plants’ total annual output currently stands at 42.7Mt, and the figure is expected to reach 50Mt over the next few years. Athi River Mining yesterday posted an increase of 64 per cent in its after-tax profit for the first six month to June 30. Surendra Bhatia, the firm’s Managing Director, announced that the profits-after tax had increased to Sh81 million, up from a low of Sh49 million". Rumors of striking employees at Giant Cement, Harleyville, South Carolina being told to "hit the road" Friday morning were not true, a company spokesman says. "The rumor this morning that we fired over 100 people is not true," said John Von Tress, vice president of operations for Giant Cement Holding Inc. "You cannot fire people for striking. North America leads profit improvement at Holcim

Holcim’s turnover in the first half of the year rose by 24.6 per cent to SwFr.7,870m (€5,077m) and the operating profit at the EBITDA level improved by 18.4 per cent to SwFr.2,037m (€1,314m), as the negative weather effect in the first quarter was worked away. Senate to release findings on cement competition
