Malaysia’s Tasek Corporation Bhd will set up a joint venture with Saigon Cement Joint Stock Company in Vietnam to establish a cement manufacturing plant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Tasek will own 51 per cent of the joint venture with the balanced owned by Saigon Cement.

Ukrainian cement plant Balcem, formerly known as Balakleyski cement, produced a total of 146,000t of cement in January to February 2005. Cement consumption in Spain increased 1.07 per cent year-on-year to 7.26Mt in the first two months of 2005, Spanish Cement Makers Association (OFICEMEN) said on March 16, 2005.  Cement production in Spain increased by 3.01 per cent year-on-year to 7.11Mt in January and February 2005. Cement manufacturers in Pakistan have proposed the government to abolish central excise duty (CED) on cement. Hong Kong-listed Chia Hsin Cement Greater China Holdings Corp said Tuesday its 2004 net profit fell 22 per cent from a year earlier, on lower Chinese cement prices despite rising raw material costs.  Net profit for the year ended Dec 31, 2004 totaled US$14.7m, or 1.3 US cents per share, down from US$19.0m, or 2.1 US cents per share in the previous year.
