Vietnam Faces Cement Shortage in 2005

The Vietnam Cement Corp. VNCC) has predicted that the shortfall of cement would continue this year due to booming demand.   The cement demand is estimated at 29.1Mt while production volume will be just 22.6Mt this year, said the country’s largest cement producer.   The annual demand growth has been 15 per cent and supply growth 10 per cent in the last two years, aggravating the deficit. The Ministry of Construction said there were no cement imports so far this year.   To cope with this...

Cement industry hit by higher coal prices

Vietnam’s cement industry has been seriously hit by surging coal prices, a major fuel used to produce cement, said cement producers at an industry seminar in Hanoi March 9. Lafarge to complete new cement works in Mexico

Lafarge expects to complete the construction of  a new cement works in thestate of Hidalgo by the end of 2005 or the beginning of 2006. The head of Lafarge’s Mexican operations, Maximo Dolman, said the plant  will initially produce about 600,000tpa of cement, with the possibility of doubling the production capacity in the future. The company has invested US$120m in the new plant.          

Kryvyi Rih Cement increases production

Kryvyi Rih Cement (Dnipropetrovska region, Ukraine), one of the countries five largest cement producers, increased cement production by 12,200t or 29 per cent to 54,300t in January, compared with January 2004.  According to company spokesman, in January 2005 Kryvyi Rih Cement produced 98,174t of clinker. Increasing demand for cement from the New Zealand building boom has prompted Fletcher Building to spend $60m on its plant at Whangarei. Cement Industries Malaysia Bhd (Cima), the country’s third biggest cement producer, plans to set up a M$50m (US$13.1m) grinding plant in Sudan to expand its export market, the New Straits Times reported. The government is expecting the immediate construction of three new cement plants worth US$481.2m after the issuance of investment permits to three foreign investors, the Investor Daily reported quoting Minister of Industry Andung Nitimihardja.
