Colombia’s Argos to sell coal mine

Colombian cement group Argos SA and affiliates have agreed to sell their La Jagua coal mine to Swiss-based commodity trader Glencore International AG, the companies said on Monday.  The sale by Argos and its affiliates Cementos del Caribe SA (CCB.CN) and CI Carbones del Caribe SA will go through on Dec. 31, 2004, the companies said on the Securities Superintendency Web site.  They did not provide a price. The Mexican government is looking for a way to take advantage of the 27,000 tons of cement that could be retained by customs under to litigation against the company Comercio para el Desarrollo Mexicano (CDM) due to alleged illegal importation. Holcim’s Chief Executive Markus Akermann told Finanz und Wirtschaft Saturday that the cement company is looking for growth in Latin America and Asia.  Akermann said Holcim has minority stakes in China and in Central America which it will increase or turn into majority holdings at some point. A hearing over a legal challenge to building group Boral Ltd’s takeover bid for Adelaide Brighton Ltd has been delayed today as the parties are yet to finalise evidence.  The Federal Court in Melbourne today granted an adjournment of the hearing of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) proceedings against the proposed takeover.
