Pakistan cement sales have recorded a growth of 24 per cent in August, as total cement sales stood at 1.292 million tons compared to 1.044 million tons of same period last year.  According to the data compiled by Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), export of cement went up to 64,000 tons with a growth of 68 percent year-on-year basis in August 2004. The Brazilian cement manufacturer Votorantim Cimentos and the Belgian Lhoist have created a joint venture in the lime segment. Known as Mineracao Belocal, the company will integrate all lime assets from Votorantim regarding to plants and exploitation rights of limestone mines. Holcim plans to reduce workforce

Holcim plans to reduce the workforce at its Obourg factory in Belgium as part of a cost-cutting program.  The reorganization is necessary to make the plant competitive in the European cement market, Holcim’s Belgian unit said in a statement, without specifying how many jobs would be lost. Grasim Industries Ltd, the AV Birla group flagship, is poised to expand the capacity of its cement division by 4Mt. Sources said following the acquisition of Larsen & Toubro’s cement unit in July, the company’s cement capacity stands at 31Mt. Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd (GACL) has announced the completion of its cement-grinding unit at Darlaghat in Himachal Pradesh. The capacity of this plant has now increased by 600,000tpa. The expansion has been undertaken at a cost of about Rs500m. This additional capacity would now enhance Ambuja Group’s capacity to 15.5Mt from the existing 14.9Mt. ACC, Gujarat Ambuja despatches up

ACC and Gujarat Ambuja Cement Ltd (GACL) overcame the transporters’ strike to increase their cement despatches during the month of August. However, Aditya Birla group companies Grasim and UltraTech Cement were adversely affected by the transporters’ strike. ACC reported a 5.6 per cent increase in cement despatch to 12.46 lakh tonne in last month compared with 11.80 lakh tonne in the corresponding month last year.
