Guyana’s government has suspended duties on cement imports for a year to encourage local firms to import the product from outside the Caribbean, local press reported. The Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP) yesterday warned that the recent oil price increases and the closure of a major cement firm is expected to push up prices of construction materials. Hectic construction investment growth and brisk demand on the cement market have stimulated drastic growth in cement production capacity in Northwest China¡&hibar;s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The total cement production capacity in the region has reached about 6.9Mt and is expected to shoot up to nearly 10Mt. But the demand is estimated to be only about 6Mt for this year and about 6.8-7.0Mt next year.

Dragon Cement and Concrete announced today it has completed a $50 million modernisation of its cement plant in Thomaston, USA, the first major expansion of New England’s only cement plant since 1971.
