Chinfon receives licence for expansion

The Chinfon Cement Hai Phong Company has received licence from the government to invest another US$162m in a factory expansion. Located in the northern port city of Hai Phong, the company aims to increase its production to 2.8Mta of cement, according to a Chinfon official. Cement consumption falls 3.82% in 2003, Philippines

Average consumption of cement in the country contracted last year on the back of a slump in the importation of cement during the period. Figures from the Cement Manufacturers’ Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) indicate cement consumption fell 3.82 per cent  to 302.99m 40kg bags in 2003, reversing the 7.57 per cent  YoY uptick in 2002.

The CeMAP figures cover consumption of local cement and cement imports.

Cement consumption of Luzon-based manufacturers remained unchanged in 2003 relative to the year-ago level of 194.40m bags, equivalent to 7.78Mt. Total cement sales in Luzon reached 194.16m bags, up 3.98%, with the island accounting for all cement imports at the time. Cebu-based cement producers recorded an 18.31% sales reduction to 46.34 million bags. Both Apo Cement Corp and Taiheiyo experienced cutbacks in sales while Lloyds-Richfield Industrial Corp. ceased operations in 2001 on account of low domestic demand. Similarly, sales of cement manufacturers in Northern Mindanao slipped by about 5.71% to 42.29m bags in 2003. Cement prices in the UAE increased by some AED40 (US$10.9) a tonne to AED240/t at the beginning of May 2004. China’s output of cement reached 180.3Mt in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 23.8 per cent over the same period of last year, according to statistics from the State Development and Reform Commission. At the same time, output of concrete, construction sanitary ceramics, plaster plate and cement production equipment posed more 30 per cent growth in the period.

Cibinong reports loss of US$1.55m

Cement producer PT Semen Cibinong reported a loss of Rp14bn (US$1.55m) last year because of falling exports. Increase in labor cost and maintenance cost also contributed to the loss, said its president Thomas Ashley Clough. Peter Orisich, the chairman of the Austrian Cement Industry Association (VÖZ), announced to the press Tuesday that the Austrian cement industry had increased its turnover by five per cent to EUR301m in 2003.
