UAE Gulf Cement to invest

UAE cement maker Gulf Cement Company, based in the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, will invest between US$80m to build a clinker plant in Ras al-Khaimah, it was reported on May 25, 2004.  The company has signed a letter of intent with the German steel and engineering group ThyssenKrupp for the construction of the new plant, which will be built on the grounds of the company’s current plant. Cemex thinks US cement tariff will go

Mexican cement producer Cemex is confident that the US government will eliminate anti-dumping duties against Mexican cement imports in September, El Norte reported.  Cemex is confident the US department of commerce will eliminate the tariff, which has been in effect for more than 10 years. The Mexican government has already appealed against the tariff to the World Trade Organization and is waiting for the US to respond.

First quarter cement sales up

Cement sales in Bolivia grew to 275,986t in the first quarter, 13 per cent higher than the 244,154t recorded in the corresponding period in 2003, Correo del Sur reported.  The leading regions for sales were Chuquisaca, La Paz and Cochabamba, recording sales of 75,993t, 64,306t and 51,963t respectively, according to information from the Bolivian institute of cement and concrete, and the national statistics institute.

Egypt’s Misr Beni Suef Cement (MBSC) said on Monday its file on a possible takeover by Irish construction company CRH Plc was "completely finished", quashing rumours of a possible takeover. Indonesia’s cement consumption in the first quarter of 2004 reached 6.652Mt, which was a 9.7 per cent increase compared to the 6.064Mt in the corresponding period of 2003. Lilama signs for new plant

Representatives of Hung Vuong Cement Plant and Vietnam Construction and Machinery Installation Corp, or Lilama, signed an engineering and procurement (EPC) contract on Saturday in Hanoi to build the plant in the northern province of Phu Tho. In April, cement production in the Ukraine rose by 23.5 per cent or 186,000t compared with April 2003, to 977,000t.  In April, cement production rose by 28.9 per cent or 219,000t compared with March 2004 figures.  In 2003, cement production rose by 24.7 per cent compared with 2002, to 8,916,000t. Nationwide capacity is monitored at around a present 20Mt.
