Government may further cut duty on imported cement, Philippines

The government may further reduce the duty on imported cement following the recent rise in prices of local cement, Trade and Industry Undersecretary Adrian Cristobal Jr. said. Qatar National Cement Co. (QNCD.DO) and France’s FCB-Ciment have signed a protocol to establish a new cement plant to help meet rapid urban expansion in the tiny Gulf state. The new plant, Qatar’s third, is expected to enter operation around the fourth quarter of 2005 and will produce some 4,000tpd. Cement sector resumes growth

The Brazilian union of the cement industry SNIC (Sindicato Nacional da Industria do Cimento) expects a 2% increase in 2004 over an 11% fall in 2003. The sector has been falling since 2001 and reported an 1.9% decrease in the Q1 2004 (Jan-Mar) jumping to a 24.2% increase in March over February and a 12.4% raise over March 2003. Cementos Bío Bío reports 14 per cent sales growth

Cement company Cementos Bío Bío reported 14% YoY sales growth in the first quarter of 2004, due to better exploitation results and lower non-operating losses. The firm reported that cement sales increased 1.4% in the period January-March 2004 compared to the same three months of last year, while concrete sales rose 23.6%. Colombian cement sales in March 2004 totalled 500,244t, exceeding the threshold of 500,000t, registered in September 2003, the Colombian Institute of Cement Makers, ICPC, said on May 14, 2004. Cement producer Duna-Drava Cement Kft (DDC) is planning developments at its factory in Beremend (southern Hungary) that could total as much as HUF 5bn. Turkish cement and clinker producer Cimentas achieved all-time high exports of 900,000t of cement and clinker in 2003. Cimentas exports exceeded its domestic sales in 2003, according to the company’s management board chairman Walter Montevecchi.
