German losses depresses RMC results

Dalmia Cement to set new plant

Dalmia Cements Bharat is to set up a brownfield cement manufacturing unit at Dalmiapuram, Tamil Nadu, at an approximated cost of Rs365 crore (US$80m). This is part of the company’s expansion project, according to a company notification. The manufacturing capacity would have an annual capacity of 1.6Mt. Dalmia Cement already has a 1.23Mt facility at Dalmiapuram. India Cement is however the major player in the Tamil Nadu market at present with a market share of 20 per cent.

Saudi Southern Province improves

Saudi cement producer, Southern Province Cement (SPC), reported a total output of 3.8Mt of cement for 2003, compared to 3.7Mt for 2002, recent statistics showed.  Local sales stood at 3.596Mt, against 3.628Mt, while cement exports rose to 212,000t from 57,000t. Group ’not supplying’ cement for West Bank barrier

CRH has firmly denied that Israeli group Mashav, in which it owns a 25 per cent shareholding, is supplying cement or concrete to the security barrier being built by Israel in the West Bank. Indonesia’s largest cement firm PT Semen Gresik reportedly said French cement group Lafarge SA has expressed interest in acquiring a stake in the company, replacing Mexican cement firm Cemex SA, the daily Koran Tempo reported.  Tempo quoted Semen Gresik corporate secretary Subagio as saying that Lafarge has made an offer with the government to become a shareholder of Semen Gresik.  He said Lafarge has yet to follow up its offer with a solid proposal.  The French company was among several inv...

Larsen & Toubro says Feb shipments up

Larsen & Toubro Ltd, India’s No 2 cement maker, said on Monday total shipments of cement and clinker in February rose 6.6 per cent from a year earlier to 1.35Mt.  Cement shipments, including exports, in February were 9.7 per cent higher at 1.09Mt, it said.  Larsen shares jumped 4.5 per cent to 588.45 rupees on the Bombay exchange, whose key index closed up 2.8 percent.

Turkey production up

The cement association Turkiye Cimento Mustahsilleri Birligi announced that cement production increased by 7.2 per cent y/y in 2003 to 35Mt. Domestic sales and exports also increased by 4.0 per cent y/y to 28Mt and 22.5 per cent y/y to 7.3Mt.

Gresik’s Jan Cement Sales +3.8 per cent

PT Semen Gresik, an Indonesian cement maker, Monday said cement sales in January rose 3.8 per cent on-year to 1.233Mt due to an increase in domestic sales.  Semen Gresik’s domestic cement sales during the month rose 9.6 per cent vto 1.062Mt from 969,309t in January last year.  Its cement exports, however, slumped 22 per cent on-year to 170,779t.  Semen Gresik didn’t comment on its sales performance.  According to data from Indonesia’s cement producer association, national cement sales in Janu...
