The Department of Trade abnd Industry (DTI) has warned cement manufacturers in Cebu to price their products more reasonably or face intervention by the agency.  DTI Secretary Cesar Purisima himself found out that cement price in Manila is lower than in Cebu and Davao where the plants are located.  Earlier, Cebu Gov. Mexico’s two major cement makers Cemex and Apasco raised prices this week by 5 to 6 per cent, eliminating discounts from last year to compensate for higher costs, sources said.  At the start of 2003, the cement makers beefed up cement prices around 7 per cent, but demand was hit by the increase and the two companies had to apply discounts to distributors so sales were not affected.  "The increase was made on Feb 23," a Cemex executive who asked not to be identified told Reuters on Friday. In January 2004, the Eurocement holding company produced more than 320,000t of cement, a 18 per cent year-on-year rise.  Packed cement production increased by 25 per cent year-on-year. Eurocement plans to turn out about 8Mt of cement this year.  Eurocement, Russia’s biggest cement holding company, controls 20 per cent of the Russian and 60 per cent of the Moscow cement market. In 2002, the company made over 7Mt of cement.

Construction of the northeastern region’s largest cement plant kicked off in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai on Sunday.
