Ghana building code is launched

The Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana (CMAG) has made a comprehensive 'Ghana Building Code' to ensure cement sold in the country is within the standards specified in the code. CMAG's Executive Secretary, Rev Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah believes the code will serve as a check to flush out sib-standard cement on the market. Nepal to be self-sufficient in cement production in 2019

The Cement Manufacturers' Association of Nepal claims that, while the import of clinker has increased due to high production demands, it expects the country to be self-reliant on clinker production from next year. The Adamawa Government in Nigeria has signed an agreement with Dangote Group and three foreign firms to establish cement factories in the state. Shanti Sashi, the state Commissioner for Mineral Resources, said the state government is on the verge of getting all necessary approvals at the federal level for the investor to assemble the factory. Domestic cement sales in September rose 23 per cent YoY in September 2018 to 5.313Mt, according to data published by the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Brazil’s cement producers sold 4.564Mt of cement to domestic customers in September 2018, down 5.6 per cent when compared to the 4.835Mt sold in the year-ago period, according to the country’s cement producers’ association, SNIC. Cement consumption in Peru reached 0.966Mt in September 2018, slipping by 0.3 per cent when compared with the year-ago period, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement producers dispatched some 0.958Mt in September, 0.5 per cent less than in the previous-year’s period, when 0.975Mt was delivered. South Korean investors looking at DRC limestone deposit

A group of South Korean investors visited the Bakwa Tshiluila limestone deposit in Kasai Oriental province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Their mission was to carry out feasibility studies in cement production, diamond mining and agriculture. Investors were interested in the quality of limestone but reportedly voiced concern over the power supply to the area.

Packaging costs rise 117% in Iran

The price of cement packaging in Iran has increased by 117 per cent from late-2017, according to Mohammad Ali Bod, member of the Iranian Cement Industry Employers' Association. The cost of packaging for a 50kg cement bag has risen from IRR8500 (US$0.2) to IRR18,500, with the surge negatively impacting producers. “Some plants will have to stop operating if the country doesn’t take necessary steps to resolve this problem,” said Mr Bod.
