Last week, Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) and Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) announced a plan calling for an increase in federal petrol and diesel taxes to shore up the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) and prevent a potential nationwide road construction work stoppage.  According to initial reports, the taxes will generate US$164bn increase in HTF revenues. Spain: May cement demand down 2.9%

Cement consumption in Spain reported a 2.9 per cent drop in May to 978,688t, which is 28,849t less than the same month of last year, domestic cement association, Oficemen has said. The latest figure brings cement consumption for the year to date to 4,229,479t, down 3.5 per cent when compared with January-May 2013. Oficemen said it has been the first May since 1965 that cement consumption did not surpass the 1Mt mark.

Lafarge and Holcim hire banks to sell assets

Lafarge and Holcim have hired banks to sell assets as they try to secure antitrust approval for their planned merger, according to reports by Bloomberg citing people with knowledge of the matter. Holcim has hired Credit Suisse and HSBC, while Lafarge is working with Morgan Stanley and BNP Paribas, the sources stated. Paraguay river flooding reduces INC output capacity

Due to the flooding of the Paraguay River, Industria Nacional del Cemento in Paraguay will operate at only 70 per cent of its production capacity this week, said its president Jorge Méndez. Tajik-Chinese talks over new plant project

Talks between Tajiki and Chinese investors are underway over the construction of a cement plant in the south of the central Asian country. The 1Mta cement plant is expected to be constructed in Dangara, unnamed government sources revealed to local press. The estimated cost of the project is reported to be around US$150m.

Cementos Molins expects to be back in the black in Spain thanks to the deceleration of the market slowdown in the country and the development of its business in Mexico. Misr Beni Suef signs equipment contract to facilitate coal usage

Misr Beni Suef Cement has reportedly signed contracts with a European company for the equipment needed to operate a kiln line with coal, involving an investment of EGP200m (US$28m). A company source told local press that after the purchase the cement producer would operate one line with coal and the other with natural gas.
