Vietnam's Jan cement output increases

Vietnam is estimated to produce 4.8Mt of cement in January, up three per cent YoY but down 13.24 per cent from December 2013, the government General Statistics Office said in a monthly report. The office revised down the country’s cement output in December 2013 to 5.5Mt the earlier estimated figure of 5.7Mt. In 2013, Vietnam’s cement output hit 56.84Mt, according to the revised figure.

Fitch Ratings raises GCC outlook

Fitch Ratings has revised its outlook for Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) from 'Stable' to 'Positive.' The upward revision reflects Fitch's view that GCC's operations could gain momentum resulting from US construction spending expanding in 2014 driven by continued strength in residential construction, and to a lesser extent in modest recovery in commercial and public construction spending. Dangote Cement plc is planning to build a presence in three South American countries, according to Nigeria’s economic newspaper Business Day, quoting Devakumar Edwin, Dangote’s CEO. Cade likely to impose fine on Brazil producers

Brazil's antitrust watchdog Cade is likely to impose fines totalling BRL3.1bn (US$1.3bn) on six cement producers for alleged market collusion. Late Wednesday, four of five members of the board of Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense, or Cade, voted for the penalties, while the remaining member requested a review of the process. CBR, part of HeidelbergCement, announced Wednesday to staff representatives that the company plans to close the Harmignies 0.22Mta white cement plant in Belgium, a move which is expected to affect 97 jobs. Ciments de L’Afrique (Cimaf), a subsidiary of Ciments de L’Atlas, has said it intends to officially start production at its Doula grinding plant in Cameroon next month. Ahangarancement, part of the Eurocement Group, produced over 1.116Mt of clinker and 1.62Mt of cement in 2013. The Uzbekistan-based producer said clinker volumes rose by 13 per cent YoY (or 137,600t) while cement output was up by six per cent (86,400t).
