ARM optimistic on Kitui plant construction start, Kenya

Kenyan producer ARM Cement is getting closer to launching construction of a US$400m plant in Kitui County, the company’s managing director has said. Ministry of Construction (MoC), said cement output in 2013 hit 70Mt while sales rose 14 per cent YoY to 61Mt. Moroccan sales hit by wet weather effect

Cement sales in Morocco during January 2014 experienced a significant fall of 12.9 per cent YoY to 1Mt. The decrease has been attributed to continued rainfall which affected construction projects. However, the rate of YoY decline has slowed compared with the 25 per cent drop recorded in 2013 when sales fell from 1.58Mt in January 2012 to 1.17Mt. Brazil Jan cement sales rise 6.8% YoY

Preliminary data and market estimates show that Brazilian cement sales increased by 6.8 per cent in January 2014 to 5.9Mt, latest data from local cement association SNIC shows.  Sales for the 12 months between February 2013 – January 2013 totaled 79.4Mt, representing an increase of 2.5 per cent compared to the comparative period of the previous year (February 2012 – January 2013).

The Netherlands: Limburg postpones ENCI decision

The provincial government of Limburg, The Netherlands, has not taken any further decision regarding ENCI – contrary to expectations. A new decision is required as the Dutch Council of State revoked the cement company’s environmental permit. While the subject was discussed in a meeting on Tuesday, the decision has been postponed until next Tuesday. Environmental pressure group ENCI Stop has demanded that the factory be closed as it now temporarily operates without a permit.

Nigeria sets up technical committee to review quality

The government of Nigeria has set up a technical committee to review the quality of cement produced within the country and is said to be evaluating the impact of eliminating 32.5 grade cement. Argentina: producers benefit from modest rise in demand

In January 2014, Argentina’s cement plants shipped 931,738t, including exports, reflecting a MoM increase of 0.4 per cent and a YoY rise of two per cent. The domestic marked demand, which includes imports, reached 910,379t, noting a 0.5 per cent fall from December 2013, but a 2.5 per cent advance on a year ago.

ACC inaugurates blended cement facility, India

ACC has inaugurated a blended cement plant at Padubidri in Udupi district in the Karnataka state of India. The unit will use fly ash from Udupi Power Corporation’s thermal power plant in Udupi, PN Iyer, chief executive (South) of ACC Ltd, told those in attendance.
