Holcim could face 20% fine, Brazil

Holcim may be issued with a fine this year for price fixing practices in Brazil, a third less than the maximum that was expected, BusinessWeek reports. Siam City Cement, part of the Holcim group, has revised upwards its 2012 cement consumption outlook to six per cent due to good economic growth and the expected launch of government flood-prevention projects in the second half. India’s leading cement producer UltraTech Cement has reported a 14 per cent rise in net profit for the first quarter of the current fiscal (1QFY13) thanks to higher sales and increased prices The company reported on Friday that net profit rose to IN7.78bn (US$141m) from INR6.83bn in the same corresponding period of the previous year. Sancim Cement is to build a new cement plant in Adana, southern  Turkey, according to daily Milliyet. The plant will be able to produce 1.7Mta of clinker and 2Mta cement and the investment period is expected to be around 20-22 months.

Vietnam cement prices drop on weak demand

The price of cement in Vietnam has dropped to VND100,000/t (US$4.8) in the first half of 2012 due to low demand and high stockpiles, according to the Vietnam Cement Association. For the six months to June 2012, cement production and consumption fell 10 per cent YoY to 24.3Mt and 23.6Mt, respectively.
