Domestic consumption in the Dominican Republic fell eight per cent in 2011 compared to 2010, as the Caribbean island continues to feel the impact of the global economic downturn. Cement production in the Ukraine in March 2012 grew by 7% compared to March 2011 to 620,000t, the country’s state statistics service has said. Cement output in the January-March 2012 period came to 1.28Mt, which is 3.5% up YoY. Last year, cement production rose 11.2% compared to 2010, to 10.52Mt. Ambuja Cements posted a 23.4% drop in its first quarter net profit at INR312.2 crore against INR407.5 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The company's 1Q net sales saw a rise of 19% to INR2633.3 crore against INR2212.5 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Loma Negra announces new plant construction, Argentina

Argentine cement producer Loma Negra has announced it will invest US$250m in a new cement plant in the province of San Juan. The factory will be built in the town of Pocito, 20km from the capital of San Juan, and will have a production capacity of 1Mta of cement. Currently, Loma Negra has nine plants, six of which are in the province of Buenos Aires, while the remaining are in Neuquén, San Juan and Catamarca. Loma Negra is part of Brazilian conglomerate Camargo Corrêa.

UltraTech in talks to buy Mozambique mine

Aditya Birla group's UltraTech Cement - India's largest cement maker, is in talks to acquire a large limestone mine in Mozambique for about INR1500 crore. Pakistan’s DG Khan Cement swings to net profit

DG Khan Cement, Pakistan’s second-biggest producer, swung to a third-quarter profit thanks to an increase in prices.   Net income in the three months ended March 31 was PKR754.6m (US$8.3m), compared with a loss of PKR5.32m in the same period a year ago, according to a statement to the Karachi Stock Exchange. Sales rose 21 per cent to PKR6.23bn.

Saudi cement sales reach monthly high – report

Saudi Arabian cement sales and clinker production reached record monthly highs in March 2012, a new report by NCB Capital shows. “Domestic cement sales rose 12.6 per cent YoY and 10.2 per cent MoM to 4.89Mt in Mar-12. Local clinker sales rose to 135,000t against 10,000t in February 2012,” the report said. European construction output dropped for a third month in February, led by declines in Germany and Italy. Construction in the 17-nation euro region plunged 7.1 per cent from January, when it slipped a revised 0.5 per cent, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg said.
