Brazil Jan-July 2011 sales up 7.6%

Preliminary data and market estimates show that domestic cement sales in Brazil between the Ja nuary-July 2011 period were 35.6Mt, up 7.6 per cent on the same period of 2010. In July alone, sales stood at 5.5Mt, representing an increase of 5.6 per cent on July 2010. US shipments see second successive monthly increase

US Geological Survey preliminary estimates indicate that US cement shipments in June 2011 were 2.8% higher than in June 2010, in line with expectations by Jefferies. This followed an increase of 2.5% in May. US cement shipments have increased in four of the first six months of this year, and were only down 0.4% in January-June 2011 compared with the same period last year due to April’s 13.5% decline. CRH reports first half turnover recovery

CRH’s first half turnover recovered by 4.4% to EUR8525m as the EBITDA recovered by 8.6% to EUR626m and the trading profit by 45.1% to EUR209m. The pre-tax profit more than trebled to EUR95m. Net debt at the end of June was 21.4% lower at EUR 3906m, giving a gearing ratio of 39.5%  compared with 48% a year earlier. TANCEM to begin importing cement, India

The Tamil Nadu Cement Cements Corporation Limited (TANCEM) would take steps to import cement from other countries and sell them at lower cost, Industries Minister S P Velumani told the State Assembly today. Making announcements, while replying to the demand for grants for his department, Mr Velumani said in order to control cement price in the open market, TANCEM is exploring the possibility of importing cement of up to five lakh tonnes from other countries and provide it at lesser cost.

Vietnam’s Hoang Thach to expand production

Hoang Thach Cement Company, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Cement Industry Corp (VICEM), plans to upgrade production lines 1 and 2, increasing their capacity by 15-45 per cent to 3800-4500tpd. The company will also install another grinding mill with a capacity of 250tph and cement silos which can hold up to 20,000t.

Hima Cement boosted by new quarry licence, Uganda

Hima Cement has received a license to mine limestone from the Dura quarry to supply its new factory in Kasese district. It will help Hima increase production capacity from 350,000t to 850,000t, according to Allen Mate, plant manager. 
Mate pointed out that the Dura limestone reserves, in use since the 1950s, would enable the production of over 500,000tpa for the next 25 years.
