Pakistan cement sales likely to reach 2.7Mt in July

Pakistan cement dispatches in July are expected to touch 2.7Mt, showing an improvement of 10 per cent over July 2010, industry sources said.

Holcim NZ hopes a decision by its European parent on whether to go ahead with a new cement plant near Oamaru will be made by December or early next year. The Christchurch-based company has previously said if it gets the go-ahead, the plant could be operating within about three years of a board approval. Indonesian cement producer, PT Semen Gresik, plans to build a new factory in Papua with an investment of US$150m. Dwi Soetjipto, the president of the state company, said the factory would have a production capacity of 600,000tpa. Holcim has delayed the decision on a proposed plant in Weston, New Zealand, until the end of the year, according to local press reports. Oamaru leaders have been expecting a final decision this week at Holcim’s international board meeting in Switzerland. Holcim New Zealand says the meeting did review the project but did not make any final decisions.

Carlos Ermírio de Moraes, Chairman of the Board of Votorantim Participações (VPAR) has died. The son of Mr. Antônio Ermírio de Moraes e Mrs. Maria Regina Moraes, Carlos Ermírio was Chairman of the Board of Votorantim Participações (VPAR) since 2001. With over 30 years of service to the Votorantim group, he also played an active role in Votorantim Cimentos, CBA, Votorantim Metais and Votorantim Energia, the group said in a statement.

Nigerian price hike attributed to higher LPFO costs

Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria said on Wednesday in Lagos that the current high cost of cement is due to an increase in the cost of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO). James Salako, secretary of the association, told reporters that the price of the oil had increased from N40 to N68 per litre. Salako said the distributors of cement took advantage of this to increase the price, knowing full well that manufacturers would not cope with the price differential for a long period.

Boral cement turnover advances

Boral’s turnover in the year to the end of June recovered by 2.4% to AUD4710.5m (€3,415.1m) and the EBITDA improved by 3.4% to AUD522m (€378.5m).  The trading profit rose by 10.0% to AUD$277.2m (€201.0m) and net interest charge fell by 34.3% to AUD63.7m (€46.2m) so the running pre-tax profit advanced by 37.8% to AUD213.5m (€154.8m).
