Pakistan: local industry can cater to cement demand

Credit Suisse cuts Lafarge rating to "neutral"

Credit Suisse has downgraded its rating on French cement maker Lafarge to "neutral" from "outperform", while raising the share price target to EUR 51 from EUR 48. According to the broker, the higher energy costs will have a negative impact on the company.

Philippines to suspend import duty on cement

Philippine President Benigno Aquino said on Thursday that import duties on cement and wheat imports will be suspended to limit the impact of rising global prices on domestic buyers. Wheat and cement imports were exempted from the duties in late 2008 by the previous government. A plan by the new government to extend the exemption last year did not eventuate. Birla Corporation Limited, the flagship company of the MP Birla Group, Thursday signed a pact with the Assam Mineral Development Corporation ( AMDC) for setting up a 1Mt greenfield cement plant in Assam at a cost of around INR450 crore. Lafarge India outlines plans for new plant

Lafarge India Eastern, which is a wholly owned arm of Lafarge India, has chalked out an ambitious plan to set up a 1.1Mta integrated cement plant at Nongkhleih in the limestone rich Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. The project, which would be the biggest private sector investment in the northeastern region, is currently crossing various stages of clearances.

Vietnam demand forecast to rise to 56Mt

Vietnam is forecast to use 56Mt of cement in 2011, up nine per cent from a year earlier. The country’s cement production is forecast to reach to 65.8Mt due to the additional operation of 10 cement plants with a combined capacity of 15Mta, the Vietnam Cement Association said. Vietnam’s cement sales stood at 50.21Mt in 2010, including used 5.08Mt in December, fulfilling 100% of the sector’s whole-year target. The country’s cement price is expected to be stable in 2011 due to higher supply.

Saudi Cement sales rise 13%

Cement sales in Saudi Arabia rose 13% last year, as the emergence of residential, commercial and infrastructure projects throughout the Kingdom require building resources. December saw a particularly strong rise. Total sales rose from 3.48Mt to 3.87Mt, up 11%, with fourth quarter sales rising 10% to 10.72Mt.

Ancap to increase production by 50%, Uruguay

Uruguay’s state oil company Ancap will invest US$70m during 2011 to reach cement production of 1Mta, a spokesperson told BNamericas. 

The expenditure forms part of the firm’s US$210mn investment budget approved by legislators to for 2011, according to the spokesperson.
