Holcim still awaiting decision on Weston plant, New Zealand

FLSmidth air pollution control order, Thailand

Siam Cement in Thailand has placed an order with FLSmith for an air pollution control system for three cement lines at its Thungsong plant. By the installation Siam Cement will comply with new environmental legislation in respect of SO2 removal. Cemcorp plans new Jamaican plant

Canadian company, Cemcorp, plans to build a US$340m, 1.5Mt cement plant at Port Esquivel, St Catherine. In its environmental impact assessment submission to the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), Cemcorp, which trades in Jamaica as Cement Jamaica Limited, proposed that the plant would take 30 months to build and commission and would make 900,000t of cement clinker in its first year of production, which in the December 2010 report was aimed at 2013. Peruvian imports to exceed 1Mt

Cement imports this year will exceed 1Mt, driven by demand growth, which rose 22.9% between January and November 2010. Last year 952,197t of different types of cement were imported: grey and white clinker. If this figure is applied to the forecast growth of construction sector in 2011 (10%), it shows that imports look set to exceed 1,047,416t. 
 
The amount imported last year was equivalent to 12.9% of total domestic cement dispatches, which, according to ASOCEM, totalled 8.1Mt in 2010.

Paraguay’s INC to invest in doubling capacity

Paraguayan state-owned cement producer INC will invest up to US$300m to double its cement production capacity by end-2011, the firm’s industrial manager, Claudio Montiel, told BNamericas. INC will invest US$60m of its own funds in a number of projects, including the expansion of one of its cements plant and its packaging plant, Montiel said. Spanish cement consumption declines 15% YoY

The Spanish cement market closed 2010 with total consumption of 24.5Mt, representing a 15 per cent decline on 2009 figures (28.9Mt). Cement production in 2010 was down by almost 12 per cent to 26Mt. Ghana: cement shortage hits Northern Region

The Northern Region of Ghana has, for the past two weeks, been hit hard by a shortage of cement.

 Although the price per bag has increased from GHS13.50 to GHS15 (US$9-10) in view of the recent fuel hikes, cement simply not available.

 This situation has grounded government and private developers’ ongoing projects. 

Some cement dealers have started importing cement from neighbouring Togo through Yendi but this does not even get to the Tamale township upon arrival due to the high demand...

Peru orders elimination of cement tariffs

Peru’s Ministry of Economy and Finance has ordered the elimination, once again, of tariffs on cement and clinker. The ministry argues that the amendment is consistent with the commitments made by Peru under the World Trade Organization.

With this decision, the García administration revokes the Constitutional Court, which in March last year ordered at the request of the company Cementos Lima to raise the import tax to 12%. The decree was also criticised by several national companies.

Al Jouf Cement swings to profit, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s Al Jouf Cement Co said Monday it showed a fourth-quarter profit of SAR16.7m (US$4.5m) on higher sales, versus a net loss of SAR16.6m a year earlier. Full-year 2010 earnings per share came in at SAR0.11, versus a loss per share of SAR0.25 in 2009, the company said in a statement posted on the Saudi bourse website. Poland’s infrastructure investment boom was the signal for cement producers to start raising prices. Since the beginning of January, companies have been testing the market. In 2010, almost 15.4Mt of cement were sold, which is a two per cent increase since 2009. Gorazdze Cement and Cementownia Ozarow raised prices by 10-12 per cent for bagged cement.
