Bolivia nationalises stake in state cement company

Bolivian President Evo Morales announced Wednesday the nationalisation of the 33 per cent of state-owned cement maker Fancesa that is in private hands.

 The decree signed by Morales in the southern city of Sucre, where Fancesa is headquartered, transfers the stake held by private cement company Soboce to the provincial government of Chuquisaca.

Lafarge Cement plans to lay off more than 13 per cent of its employees in Lichtenburg, North West, trade union Solidarity said on Wednesday. It received a Section 189 notice on Tuesday, in which the retrenchments were announced, deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann said in a statement. The prices of cement, except the state-owned brands, have dipped by 12 and 10 per cent respectively in the market, as international price dipped and construction sector continued to shrink in the new fiscal year. Indian cement manufacturer ACC Limited on Wednesday reported a five per cent dip in sales for the month of August at 1.57Mt. The company, in which Holcim has majority stake, had sold 1.65Mt cement in August 2009, it said in a statement. Production of the company also fell during the month at 1.56Mt from 1.63Mt a year-ago.
