Peru cement prices among lowest in Latin America

Capeco, the Peruvian construction chamber, reported that the average retail price for grey cement in Peru is around US$6.22 per 42.5kg bag – one of the lowest in Latin America. The highest price is paid in Argentina, where a bag of cement costs on average US$12.34, followed by Nicaragua, Uruguay, Guatemala and Paraguay, where a bag of cement costs around US$10. Peru-based Unión Andina de Cementos (Unacem) has signed a contract with Cementos La Unión and Aridos Jativa, and the Chile’s Inversiones Mel 20 Ltda for the purchase of the full stake of shares of Cementos La Unión in Chile and 100 per cent of the social rights of Inversiones Mel 20. Cement dispatches in Peru rose 15.6 per cent YoY in November 2020 to 1.188Mt from 1.028Mt in November 2019, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Of the total, 1.092Mt were supplied by Asocem members. Peruvian cement producers dispatched 1.255Mt of cement in October 2020, up 16.4 per cent YoY, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. In October 2019 dispatches reached 1.078Mt. Peru's Cementos Pacasmayo saw its sales volume of cement, concrete and precast rise 14.2 per cent YoY to 819,700t in the third quarter of 2020, reaching historical record levels, mainly due to a sharp recovery in sales of cement. Anita and Loreto Briones Goich of ALB SpA have sold their entire 19 per cent stake in Cementos Bío Bío, the cement company founded by their father, Hernán Briones Gorostiaga in 1957. Cement consumption in Peru remained largely stable at 1.018Mt in September 2020 when compared with August 2020 and increased 10 per cent YoY. Cement dispatches in Peru slipped 0.1 per cent YoY but increased 12.9 per cent MoM to 0.933Mt in August 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cementos Pacasmayo begins terminal operations

Peru’s Cementos Pacasmayo has resumed operations from the port terminal of Yurimaguas, Loreto, distributing 60,000 bags of cement to Iquitos. The company operates in the port through its subsidiary, Cementos Selva, which has a 4.9Mta plant in Rioja. The operations were launched in mid-August with the arrival of several vessels, which will set sail for Iquitos while complying with all COVID-19 safety protocols.

Cement dispatches in Peru are recovering from COVID-19 disruption. In July 2020, 0.826Mt of cement was delivered to the domestic market, according to Asocem. While still 5.7 per cent below the July 2019 level of 0.876Mt, when compared with June 2020, there was a 39 per cent surge from 0.594Mt.
