Domestic cement shipments fall, Japan

Domestic shipments of cement fell 3.5% to 57.56Mt in fiscal 2004, though the market share rankings of the top five players in the sector remained unchanged from the previous year.     Industry leader Taiheiyo Cement Corp dropped 0.8 of a share point due to declining demand in the Tohoku region, where the company holds a relatively large slice of the market. Jamaican cement maker Caribbean Cement’s (CCC) newly created Carib Cement Plus already accounts for 74 per cent of company production, The Jamaica Observer quoted CCC general manager Anthony Haynes as saying.  The company had anticipated Carib Cement Plus to represent about 10 per cent of overall production levels, "but it definitely exceeded our expectations - it has almost completely taken over the market," he said.    To make the new product, CCC has replaced clinker with a volcanic pozo...

PT Semen Gresik said its cement sales in the first six months of this year rose 3.8 per cent to 7.56Mt, driven by an increase in domestic sales.  Indonesia’s largest cement maker said its domestic cement sales rose 7.3 per cent to 6.66Mt. Its exports, however, fell 17 per cent to 878,530t.

Saudi Arabia to cut duty on cement

Saudi Arabia has decided to reduce customs duty on cement from the current level of five per cent to zero per cent within six months as part of a major move to check the rise in cement prices by liberalising imports. From August 1, there will be an increase in the ex-factory price of cement because of rising costs which Claxton Bay producer Trinidad Cement Ltd said it can no longer absorb. Pakistani denies halting cement exports to Afghanistan

The Pakistani government has rejected media speculation that it has halted cement exports to Afghanistan to bring down prices of the commodity. A senior official at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ibrar Ahmad, said Islamabad had not yet taken any decision on stopping cement exports to Afghanistan. He said Pakistan wanted to cooperate with Afghanistan as it reconstructs and further expand trade cooperation with Kabul.

Qassim Cement first-half profits up

Saudi Arabia’s Qassim Cement said its first-half net profits rose 4 per cent to 131 million riyals ($35 million).   Shares in Qassim, the smallest of Saudi Arabia’s listed cement companies in terms of market capitalisation, rose 0.3 percent to 667 riyals in morning trade before the results were announced.
