Botswana to restrict cement imports

The Botswana Government will restrict cement imports from September 2018. According to the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Bogolo Kenewendo, the step is part of the process aimed at stimulating economic activity and job creation.  "The proposed restrictions would be done through the issuance of import permit after the importer has submitted evidence that indeed they have satisfied the 70 per cent requirement," Mr Kenewendo said.

Hima Cement forecasts prices to fall in Uganda

Nicholas George, Hima Cement Country CEO, has stated that cement prices in Uganda will fall some more as new capacities, such as Hima's 1.7Mta expansion in Tororo, come on-stream. Cement exports from Pakistan are likely to benefit from the Pakistani rupee depreciation against the US dollar as reported in foreign exchange markets. LafargeHolcim Msila ships 17,000t for export to west Africa

LafargeHolcim’s plant in Msila, Algeria, has recently carried out a 17,000t shipment for west Africa. The consignment of bulk cement was delivered to the port of Djendjen. It is the seventh such delivery since December 2017 and its part of the group’s plans to export 2Mt of cement in 2020. LafargeHolcim owns two plans in Algeria – one at M’Sila and one at Oggaz (Mascara). In addition, it is part of a joint venture with the Souakri Cilas group and runs the plans at Biskra.

Pakistan exported 2.43Mt of cement during FY15-16 to Afghanistan, which fell to 1.76Mt in FY2016-17.
