Safeguard measures placed against imports into Philippines

The Philippine’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has begun preliminary safeguard measures against cement imports from Vietnam amongst other countries. As such, the DTI applied duties of PHP8.40 (US$0.16)/40kg bag or PHP210/t (US$4/t). The safeguard measures will be in place for 200 days from 18 January 2019. Gambia has imposed a new import tax regulation on cement being imported from Senegal that has exacerbated the shortage of cement and increased prices in the country. The Tasman Sea, a bulk carrier registered under a Hong Kong flag, docked at Lautoka Port to off-load clinker for the Tengy Cement Factory in Naikabula  and is expected to arrive in Suva next week for its factory in Veisari, Lami. Pakistan's cement industry received foreign exchange revenue of US$25.89m by exporting 624,714t of cement during the month of December 2018, compared to US$26.77m at 635,192t in the previous month. Bangladesh's cement industry recorded a fall of 6.7 per cent in export revenue to US$5.75m during the first six months of FY18-19 (July-December 2018) compared to US$6.16m, earned in the same months last year, according to the Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau. Exports help Saudi cement sales rise 7% in December

Iran produced 41Mt of cement during the nine months to 21 December 2018, of which 4.8Mt were exported, reports the Iran Cement Association. Tajikistan exported 1.14Mt of cement in 2018, representing a value of US$65.4m. In 2017 exports stood at 970,100t and had a value of US$49.5m.The country exports cement to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.
