Bangladesh: cement factory collapses

The BBC has reported that  a cement factory partially collapsed in Bangladesh killing eight people. The the compound is army-owned and the factory had been under construction when the accident happened. The plant is being constructed by a Chinese-owned firm. About 70 people were in the building in the port town of Mongla, 200km (125 miles) southwest of the capital Dhaka, when the roof gave way. Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia were the top importers of Vietnamese clinker and cement exports last year, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said on its website. Bangladesh took the lead after importing 8.39Mt of cement worth US$323m from Vietnam last year, while Indonesia came second with 2.65Mt worth US$123m and Malaysia ranked third with 1.28Mt worth US$62m. Sumanta Pandit appointed CEO of Holcim (Bangladesh)

Sumanta Pandit has recently been appointed chief executive officer of Holcim (Bangladesh). Mr Pandit joins the company from Emirates Cement, a subsidiary or India's UltraTech Cement where he headed the business as Country Manager. Previously, Mr Pandit has worked for various multinational cement companies in different managerial roles. In his 22 year cement industry career, he has worked in Switzerland, Oman, Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Sudan.

PT Semen Indonesia said that it intends to expand its production capacity to 72.9Mta by 2030. Lafarge Surma Cement has signed a contract to supply Metrocem Cement Ltd with clinker from its integrated cement plant in Bangladesh. Under the agreement, Lafarge Surma Cement will provide high-quality clinker to Metrocem Cement, which will then produce a Portland Composite Cement brand for Lafarge Surma Cement. A light local vessel, MV Brishti, laden with 9500t of clinker imports capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Patenga beach in Chittagong, Bangladesh following a collision with the sunken ship MV Rita on 12 June.
