Vietnam cement sales fall 0.4% YoY in Jan-Feb 2017

Vietnam sold 9.4Mt of cement in the first two months of 2017, representing a 0.4 per cent decrease when compared with January-February 2016, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Construction. The total included 6.8Mt of domestic sales, down 2.7 per cent YoY, and 2.6Mt of clinker and cement exports, a rise of 20.9 per cent YoY. Siam City Cement renames Holcim's former Vietnam operations

Siam City Cement Public Co Ltd (SCCC), Thailand’s second-largest cement producer, announced it will rename its Holcim Vietnam Co into Siam City Cement Vietnam. SCCC signed an agreement in August 2016 to buy LafargeHolcim’s entire 65 per cent stake in LafargeHolcim Vietnam for US$890m. SCCC recently embarked on a strategy of building a regional asset footprint. The cement producer has already established operations in Indonesia, Cambodia and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Vietnam exported 14.73Mt of cement in 2016, down 7.1 per cent YoY, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Export revenues fell 16 per cent YoY to US$561m. In December the country exported 1.31Mt of cement and clinker to the value of US$50.58m, increasing 7.7 per cent and 10.4 per cent MoM in volume and value, respectively. State-owned Vietnam Cement Industry Corp (Vicem) sold around 25.8Mt of cement and clinker in 2016, representing a YoY rise of 11.2 per cent and surpassing the year’s target by 11 per cent. The Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) People’s Committee has demanded Ha Tien 1 Cement cease operation of its Thu Duc cement grinding station and relocate the plant. Can Tho Mineral and Cement JSC (CCM) has announced that it has opened a new 0.5Mta cement plant on the Phu Huu industrial park near the border with Cambodia. According to the Vietnam Building Materials Association under the Ministry on Construction, Vietnam is projected to earn just US$556m this year from 15Mt of cement and clinker exports, representing a seven per cent YoY decline.
