Cement consumption in Spain hits record low in April

Spain saw cement consumption down 50 per cent YoY in April 2020 to less than 0.6Mt, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. The decline in demand has been attributed to the suspension of non-essential works between 30 March and 9 April. Lafarge Africa has reported a 9.8 per cent increase in net sales to NGN63.97bn (US$178.93m) in its unaudited results for the first quarter of 2020, compared to NGN58.02bn in the year-ago period. Huaxin Cement acquires ARM Cement's Tanzanian unit

The Tanzanian unit of Kenya's ARM Cement has been sold to China's Huaxin Cement, according to its administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers. Swiss cement deliveries stable in 1Q20

Cement deliveries in Switzerland including Liechtenstein remained largely stable in the 1Q20 at 872,104t, just slightly down from 874,275t reported in 1Q19, according to Cemsuisse, the Swiss cement association. Peru’s cement market sharply contracted to 5700t in April 2020, down from 883,000t in April 2019 and from 488,000t in March 2020, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association. Semen Indonesia Group (SIG) reported total sales in April 2020 of 3,060,256t, up 0.5 per cent when compared with April 2019, when the group achieved sales of 3,046,007t. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced 13 per cent YoY in February 2020 to 6.4Mt, reports the US Geological Survey (USGS). Cement consumption in Argentina dropped 55.2 per cent YoY and 19.7 per cent MoM in April 2020 to 403,652t from 900,938t in April 2019, according to the latest data by the country’s cement association, AFCP.
