Peru’s cement demand plummets by 69% in May

Cement consumption in Peru fell by 69.1 per cent YoY to 298,300t in May 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement production fell by 70 per cent to 263,000t in May 2020 when compared with May 2019 but recovered considerably when compared with April 2020 when COVID-19 impacted operations at the country’s cement plants. In the January-May 2020 cement and clinker exports from Turkey surged 37 per cent to 9.8Mt, according to the Turkish Cement Manufacturers’ Association (TÇMB). Export revenues advanced by 16.7 per cent YoY to US$447m. Cement exports were up  to 4.8Mt while clinker exports rose to 5Mt. South Korean producers sign agreeement to reduce NOx emissions

South Korea’s nine cement producers have agreed to work with the Ministry of Environment to lower NO x emissions, according to The Korea Times. Semen Indonesia Group (SIG) reported a 36.7 per cent drop in sales to 2,114,125t in May 2020 when compared with 3,338,768t in May 2019. Of this total Semen Indonesia, including SBI, saw sales decline by 38.5 per cent YoY to 1,936,752t (May 2019: 3,149,339t). Start-up of Fancesa project postponed to 1Q21

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a readjustment of the work schedule of the new plant being built in Sucre, Bolivia, by Fancesa as COVID-19 forced a 70-day quarantine upon the project. Start-up of the cement plant is now expected in the first quarter of 2021. The Brazilian cement market expanded by three per cent YoY to 4.761Mt in May 2020, according to the country’s cement association, SNIC. Between January-May, dispatches slipped 0.3 per cent YoY to 21,683Mt. BUA Cement has announced a 25.1 per cent YoY increase in revenue to NGN54bn (US$139.3m) in its financial results for the 1Q20. Cement exports from Turkey to Georgia fell by 8.2 per cent between January-April 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, amounting to US$12.8m. Cement production in China fell 14.4 per cent YoY to 520.949Mt in the first four months of 2020. US-based Eagle Materials has reported a record revenue of US$1.45bn in the FY19-20, up four per cent from US$1.39bn in the previous fiscal year.
