Czech 1Q cement production falls

First quarter 2010 output from Czech Republic cement plants last year stood at 390,434t, a 28 per cent decline on the year earlier according to figures from the Czech Cement Association. Japanese cement sales continue to decline

Domestic cement sales in Japan fell 11.6 per cent on the year to 3.51Mt, extending the extent of its decline to 34 months, the longest in history, the Japanese Cement Association reported. The previous record was a 33 month run from 2002 to 2004 when then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi slashed public works.

Cement demand  in India is showing signs of weakness for the second month in a row. Cement despatches grew by 8.4% (YoY) in March 2010, slightly higher than the near 7% growth which was witnessed in February. While these figures look impressive, they are they represent over a four point drop from the 12.6% growth witnessed during Dec-Jan FY10.

First quarter growth for Indonesian sales

Indonesia cement sales rose 17.72 per cent to 9.74Mt in the first quarter of this year from 8.27Mt in the same period last year. The surge reflected recovery of the market from last year’s slump brought about by global economic crisis in 2008, analysts said. Dangote plans Sierra Leone operations

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, founder and chairman of Nigeria-based Dangote Industries, plans to open cement and flour factories in Sierra Leone’s port in the capital, Freetown. Dangote would import raw materials and ship the bulk of the finished product as exports, should his company be granted licences, he said at a presentation in Freetown. The Sierra Leone Port Authority is in the process of selling the state-owned port.

France-based Vicat SA has bought a 51 per cent stake in Hyderabad’s Bharathi Cement Corp, promoted by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, a Congress legislator and son of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
