Nigeria’s Benue Cement 2009 profit rises

Nigeria’s Benue Cement Company posted at 205 per cent rise in pretax profit to NGN14.44bn in the full year to December compared with the previous period, the firm said on Thursday.   Turnover at the firm, controlled by local private conglomerate Dangote Group, soared to NGN35.02bn from NGN16.5bn in the same period of 2008, the company said in a filing to the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

FLSmidth says ‘clean sweep’ in India orders possible

FLSmidth may make a “clean sweep” of cement-plant orders in India as 2010 demand grows. “In India there’s a boom in cement and most of our customers are very aggressive on expanding capacity,” chief executive officer Joergen Huno Rasmussen said in an interview. “We’re estimating 10 per cent growth in cement consumption in India, which is double the global rate.” FLSmidth won orders last year in India to install 9.45Mt of cement capacity.

In a recent sector update on the Nigerian cement industry, Renaissance Capital forecasts a robust expansion of supply and demand for Africa’s third-largest cement market.

Cimsa begins construction of silos at Alicante, Spain

Cimsa has started construction work on the first of nine vertical silos in Puerto Alicante, which have now received approval by the Southeastern Marine Terminals. Hebei Taihang Cement Co Ltd today announced to purchase a 91% stake in Hebei Zhoushi Cement, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hebei Haitian Construction Co Ltd, for CNY182m (US$26.7m), sources reported. President inaugurates Hadramout cement plant, Yemen

President Ali Abdullah Saleh inaugurated on Wednesday the Hadramout  Cement Factory, an affiliate of the Arabian Yemen Cement Company (AYCC) in Al-Masna’ah area, in the governorate of Hadramout. The cement plant involved an investment of US$260m with a production capacity of 1.5Mta. During the opening ceremony President Saleh expressed his pleasure at the completion and opening of this important new factory which will contribute to the development and economic growth of the country.
