Japan demand falls on public works spending

Japan’s cement demand is believed to have fallen to a 41-year low in 2009 amid curbs on public works spending, the Japan Cement Association said. Demand is expected to have dropped 13.8 per cent from a year before to 44.3Mt, the lowest level since 1968 when demand totalled 45.36Mt, the association said. India’s ACC buys stake in grinding unit

Indian cement maker ACC said on Friday it had acquired the entire stake in Encore Cement & Additives Pvt Ltd, which owns a 200,000t slag grinding unit in south India. The acquisition will help strengthen ACC’s presence in coastal Andhra Pradesh, it said in a statement.

Sanghi Cement to build US$105m Kenyan plant

Recession threatens jobs at Lafarge Dunbar, UK

Lafarge cement works in Dunbar plans to implement short-term lay-offs of staff at times of low demand. Cement bosses stress temporary redundancies would be a "last resort" and the radical measure, which has been approved by staff and unions, has been undertaken to cut costs in the face of turbulent economic conditions due to the recession. Cemex 2009 turnover dropped by 27.8% to US$14,544.2m, which represents a 19% reduction on a comparable basis, allowing for divestments. In peso terms, the turnover was down by 12.3%. A substantial part of the sales decline can be attributed to lower volumes and prices in the USA and in Spain. EBITDA fell by 34.9% to US$2657m and the trading profit halved to US$1164.8m. Luquan Dongfang Dingxin Cement is a manufacturer of cement and clinker and a wholly-owned subsidiary of BBMG Corporation.

Egypt to offer licences for eight cement plants

Egypt will offer licences in the first half of this year to build eight cement factories with capacity of 1.5Mt each, Trade Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid said on Wednesday. USG books US$97m gain on Lafarge settlement

Having lost US$581m at the pre-tax level in 2008, it went on to lose a further US$337m last year and USG expects another ’challenging’ year in 2010. Carib Cement on Wednesday made the announcement pointing out that cement prices will rise by 7.5%. The company says the increase in prices is due to the increase in haulage and fuel costs.
