Lucky Cement on Monday announced it has booked profits of Rs1,908 million with earning per share (EPS) of Rs5.90 in the first half of fiscal year 2009-10 (1HFY10) versus Rs1,938 million with EPS of Rs5.99 in the same period of previous year, showing a two per cent decline. Chia Hsin to buy 1Mt cement from Anhui Conch

Taiwan’s Chia Hsin Cement Co will buy 1Mt of cement from Anhui Conch Cement Co  this year, Taiwan’s Economic Daily reported, citing an unnamed source from Chia Hsin. Reportedly, Chia Hsin will stop purchasing cement from Taiwan Cement Co and Asia Cement Co, which are Chia Hsin’s previous suppliers. Chia Hsin holds US$10m worth of shares in Anhui Conch.

PPC to seek African acquisition, South African sales down

South African cement producer, Pretoria Portland Cement Co (PPC) is seeking to make an acquisition or enter a new market in sub-Saharan Africa in the next 12 to 18 months. PPC “is looking quite carefully and very deliberately to grow outside” its existing markets, Chief Executive Officer Paul Stuiver said at PPC’s annual general meeting in Johannesburg today. Ukraine cement production down 36.3%

The Ukrtsement association reports that cement production in the Ukraine fell by 36.27% or 5.36Mt to 9.42Mt in 2009, the executive director of the association, Petro Lopatiev, told the Ukrainian News agency. He said that in 2008, a total of 14.77Mt of cement were produced in Ukraine. The executive director of the association also admitted that in 2010, housing construction will not start active development giving way to social construction.

Votorantim to invest US$2.4bn in 2010

Brazilian industrial conglomerate Grupo Votorantim is planning to invest BRL4.5bn (US$2.43bn) in its operations in 2010, the group said Tuesday in a press release. By comparison, last year the group invested BRL4.2bn in its operations. "The investment plan for the group is in line with favourable prospects for the Brazilian economy," said Jose Roberto Ermirio de Moraes, president of Votorantim Industrial, in a press release.
