There’s good news for workers at the Ash Grove Cement plant in Montana City.  Approximately 50 hourly employees who were laid off in November will be getting their jobs back in the next couple of weeks. The layoffs occurred due to a drop in demand for cement. Some electricians and maintenance workers will return to the plant over the next few days, and the remaining employees are expected back on February 15th. Indian cement producer, the Aditya Birla Group aims to spend about INR70bn (US$1.4bn) over 3-4 years to expand its cement operations, the Economic Times reported on Thursday. North Carolina environmental official say the river near a proposed cement plant already is polluted with mercury and can’t tolerate any more from the factory. Lafarge denies sale of stake to Correa

Lafarge denied press reports that it sold its 17.3% stake in Cimpor to Brazilian construction group Camargo Correa. News that Camargo Correa and Lafarge had reached a deal was reported in 14 Jan 2010 edition of Portuguese daily Diario Economico. Cimpor on 13 Jan 2010 received a merger proposal from Camargo Correa.
