Steppe Cement increases sales in a falling market

The Kazakh cement producer Steppe Cement increased the amount of cement sold in the first half by 7.3% to 0.42Mt, even though the first quarter had shown a 5.1% decline.  The average price, however, dropped by 42.6% in local currency and the turnover fell by 38.4%.   The average ex-factory cement price on conversion was US$51.49, while by the end of last month this had increased to US$68.65 per tonne. Buzzi Unicem’s first half turnover declined by 22.6% to €1,346.0m and the underlying EBITDA fell by 50.8% to €217.4m before an exceptional credit of €31.6m.  For the full year, Buzzi Unicem is currently looking for a reduction in the running EBITDA of around 40%.  The trading profit was down by 59.9% to €136.8m and, after a 59.6% increase in the interest charge, the pre-tax profit dropped by 74.7% to €80.3m and the net attributable profit by 75.9% to €40.6m.  Net debt increased by 48.7% to €...

Ghana import facility receives government support

The Ministry of Transport is facilitating the construction of an import facility on the Aflao border by the Diamond Cement Company to reduce the transport cost of clinker from Lome to Ghana.  The Deputy Minister of Transport, Dzifa Aku Ativor led a delegation of Ports Civil Engineers from her Ministry and officials of the Ghana Shipper’s Council to inspect the project site at Aflao.  She said the necessary documentation and support will be offered to ensure that the project materialises....

The new Holcim (US) Cement Plant in Ste. Genevieve is still on target for completion later this summer. Company officials have said the plant is in the commissioning and start-up phases.
