Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL), the flagship company of the diversified industrial conglomerate Jaypee Group, has inked a MoU with state-owned Assam Mineral Development Corporation Limited (AMDC) for setting up a 2Mta capacity cement plant. Two European cement companies on Friday denied that they’ve agreed on a compensation plan with President Hugo Chavez’s government following last year’s nationalization of their assets. Cement sales have passed the 3Mt mark this month, registering 15 per cent growth over dispatches of 2.6Mt produced in July 2008, industry sources said on Thursday.   The official figures by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (Apcma) are expected to be released shortly. New mill to boost capacity at Afrisam’s Roodepoort plant

South African construction materials group Afrisam has officially unveiled its vertical roller mill (VRM), the first of its kind in Southern Africa to be used for cement milling, at its newly expanded Roodepoort, Gauteng, cement production facility.   The new VRM, the eighth mill to be built on the site since 1936, will increase cement milling capacity by 120tph, adding to the existing three ball mills’ 80tph capacity. Cement firm Cimentas to raise capital to EUR41m

Turkish cement company Cimentas Izmir Cimento decided to increase its capital by TRY11.36m to TRY87.1m (EUR 41.45m) from the current TRY 75.75m.   In the filing with the Istanbul Stock Exchange, the company explains that it will lift capital in order to strengthen Cimentas’ financial position in the face of global economic crisis.    

Cementir maintains a strong balance sheet

HeidelbergCement’s first half turnover declined by 22.5% to €5,369.9m and the EBITDA fell by 35.2% to €836.2m.  The trading profit deteriorated by 49.3% to €456.9m, while the pre-tax profit dropped by 72.0% to €161.9m after, among other items, a net interest charge 21.0% lower at €290.6m.  Net debt at the end of June was 8.8% lower at €11,302m to give a gearing level of 124.2%, compared with 144.2% a year earlier.  Capital expenditure in the six months amounted to €274m, a reduction of 39.5%...
