Lafarge’s Kenyan unit, Bamburi Cement, has posted an 11 per cent decline in full-year profit as fuel, electricity and transport costs increased. Japan’s demand for cement is projected to fall to its lowest level in 41 years in fiscal 2009, according to a forecast issued Thursday by the Japan Cement Association. The trade group sees demand for the building material dropping 5 per cent on the year to 48 million tons. Readymix expects losses of €47m, Ireland

Readymix yesterday said that its losses for year-end December 2008 would be €47m, a hike of €14m on a previous guidance reflecting the downturn. In a trading update, the company, which is a subsidiary of Cemex, said in December it indicated an expected operating loss of €22m and this is unchanged. East African Portland Cement Co. posted a first-half loss of KES391.91m compared with a profit of KES338.23m shillings the year earlier. The Nairobi-based company posed a loss per share of 4.35 shillings in the six months ended Dec. 31 compared with earnings per sahre of 3.76 shillings the year earlier after fuel costs rose, it said in a newspaper advertisement today.

ACB lends VND400bn to Hoang Thach Cement

Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) yesterday inked a deal in Hai Duong Province to lend VND400bn to Hoang Thach Cement Company to develop its third cement production line. The loan term is 84 months. China’s cement output hit 82Mt in January, the same as last year’s, while sales decreased in some major cement-producing provinces, an industry association said.
