Lebanese cement deliveries rise by almost eight per cent in first half

Figures released by the central bank of Lebanon show that cement deliveries, a coincident indicator of construction activity, increased by 7.7 per cent over the first half of 2008 as compared to the same half of 2007, on account of increased construction activity to meet the rise in real-estate demand prevailing during the covered period. South African cement producer Pretoria Portland Cement on Friday announced the first production from its new Batsweledi kiln line at Dwaalboom, on the border of the Limpopo and the North West provinces. India’s Aditya Birla Group Friday said its cement sales in September rose 4.1% on year to 2.393Mt. Its sales include those of Grasim Industries Ltd and UltraTech Cement Ltd. Aditya Birla Group said its September production rose 2.7% on year to 2.391Mt. The company’s sales for the first six months of the current financial year, or the April to September period, rose 1.9% on year to 14.99Mt. Output rose 1.4% on year to 15.006Mt during the six-month period.

Russian holding Sibirsky Cement has started building a RUB57bn cement plant in the Mikhailovsky District of the Ryazan Region, the regional government said Thursday. Holcim Hungaria acquires permit to build EUR 350m plant

Holcim Hungaria has acquired a building permit for a EUR 350m cement plant it plans to build in Nyergesujfalu (NW Hungary), Holcim Hungaria communication director Iran Marta told MTI on Wednesday. The plant will be the most modern in Europe, and will replace an outdated plant nearby at Labatlan. Holcim Hungaria had revenue of HUF 32bn in 2007. It employs about 700 staff. The company spent HUF 2.3bn on developments last year.

Oborontsement kicks off construction of cement factory

Moscow-based cement manufacturer Oborontsement has kicked off construction of a cement factory in Belgorod region, regional officials report. Investment in the project hasn’t been disclosed, but is estimated by experts at $500mln. The plant will be be built on a 100-hectare site in the region’s Krasnogvardeysky district, Marchmont Capital Partners said.
