Essroc Cement Corp. is raising prices on cement-based products by US$15 per ton, citing rising production costs driven by higher energy prices. The price increase is effective Jan. 1. Philippine Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila Wednesday said he would recommend the removal of the import tariff on cement to bring down the local prices. Favila’s comments came after Holcim Philippines Inc. and Lafarge Cement announced they planned to raise cement prices in October by as much as PHP12 a 40kg bag. PT Holcim Indonesia Tbk is considering to get more loans from the World Bank unit International Finance Corporation (IFC). Holcim has asked for US$150m loan from IFC, and the figure may increase to US$200m including from the other members of the syndication. Lafarge says it will expand its investment in North Korea. A public affairs official from the firm on Thursday told Radio Free Asia that it will increase its investment in facilities at the Sangwon Cement Complex near Pyongyang. The investment is expected to boost the plant’s annual cement production to 3Mt by 2010.

Cement import accords signed, Bahrain

United Cement Company has signed contracts with two companies to import 200,000t of cement this year. Company general manger Nadhem Al Shaikh said that negotiations are being held with another international company to import 50,000t of cement in six months. PT Holcim Indonesia said it is set to register a 30 per cent increase in income to Rp4.88 trillion (US$530m) this year from Rp3.75 trillion last year.
