Initial Turkish and Chinese contributions boost Cimpor

Helped by the initial consolidation of Turkey and China, Cimpor increased turnover by 20.0% last year to EUR1,966.1m and the EBITDA emerged 7.8% higher at EUR 607.0m. India Cements to boost capacity

India Cements is to boost its production capacity to about 14Mta by December 2008 through de-bottlenecking, upgradation of production facilities and setting up of two new grinding units. Currently, it has a production capacity of 9.1Mta. The two grinding units will come up in Chennai and Perli (Maharastra) — each with a capacity of 1Mta – by the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2009. Egypt will ban cement exports from March 29th 2008 until October 1st 2008 as part of measures to control the markets. Anhui Conch Cement Co Ltd said 2007 net profit (under Chinese accounting standards) rose 64.23 per cent to CNY2.49bn, driven by strong sales and higher selling prices. Germany’s second-largest cement producer Dyckerhoff AG expects sales in the USA, where a fifth of its turnover is generated, to fall ostensibly in 2008, CEO Wolfgang Bauer said on March 26, 2008.     Bauer based this prospect on the weak residential construction market and the increasing competition in the USA. It is has been reported that major cement makers in Pakistan have raised prices due to high cost of raw materials especially coal that has surged to around US$140/t from US$90/t in the last six months. The Ministry of Construction has rejected rumours circulated in the local media that cement prices had increased 40 per cent since the end of 2007 or that cement supplies were scarce.
