New plant for Jamaica

Local firm Mainland International will this year break ground for its previously-announced cement manufacturing plant, that will, at full production capacity, be able to meet the equivalent of a third of Jamaica’s current demand for cement. Cementir is acquiring the Elazig cement works in eastern Anatolia from the Turkish army pension fund Oyak for US$110m.  Assuming clearance by the Turkish competition authorities, this deal will bring the number of cement works owned by Cementir’s Turkish subsidiary Cimentas to four and the production capacity to around five million tonnes. ALAS International, a subsidiary of Austrian building materials producer Asamer Holding, on Tuesday made a buyout offer on the Sarajevo Stock Exchange to acquire 100 per cent of its Bosnian cement plant.
