Lafarge quizzed over its high Kenyan involvement

Kenya’s Trade and Industry Minister Mukhisa Kituyi has said the government was uncomfortable with Lafarge’s dominance in the domestic cement  and that it wanted more competition. Lafarge currently owns 73 per cent of the market leader in Kenya, Bamburi Cement , and 15 percent of Athi River Mining. Siam City seeks higher prices to combat costs

Siam City Cement PCL (SCCC), Thailand’s second-biggest cement maker, said on Friday its 2006 net profit would be lower than the 4 billion baht (US$107m) earned in 2005 as costs rose. Revenues this year should be higher than last year’s 22 billion baht, but rising energy costs would hurt its bottom line, executive vice president Chantana Sukumanont told reporters. Kuwaiti-Jordanian Holding investments

Kuwaiti-Jordanian Holding Company (KJHC) has started investing in Jordan by establishing a US$250m new cement factory, said the company’’s CEO Reem Badran. KJHC’’s capital is split by 60 per cent for Kuwaitis and 40 per cent for Jordanians.

New Lafarge research centre opens

Lafarge has unveiled a research centre in Staffordshire. The technical laboratory, based at its Cauldon production centre, will replace its former laboratory in Kent. The UK£2m development includes laser equipment to study the control of particle distribution in cements and thermal equipment that will help the 11-strong research team look at the properties of materials. Plans have been submitted by the Bermuda Cement Company to construct the new cement storage and distribution centre, freeing up the old site for future historical and tourism-orientated development. PCA Summer Forecast Revises 2006 growth targets

Although a slowdown of the US economy is expected, experts predict cement consumption this year to reach 129.6Mst, an increase of 2.3 percent compared to 2005 levels, extending a three-year period of continual growth.  Additional growth is forecasted for 2007, with a 1.2 percent consumption increase. Ultratech Cement Ltd said it has stopped operations at its 0.70Mta grinding unit at Surat in India’s flood-hit western Gujarat state.    "The company is assessing the losses, if any, as a result of the shut down. Russia’s Eurocement to sell 25% of cement output on exchange Sep

Russia’s largest cement producer Eurocement plans to sell 500,000t of cement, or 25% of its total output, on the Moscow Stock Exchange (MSE) in September, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported Wednesday, citing Andrei Kashevarov, deputy director of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS).     Eurocement started trading cement on the MSE in July on the recommendation of the antimonopoly service, Kashevarov said.     In the future Eurocement may sell up to 40% of its cement output on the ...
